Special Online Seminar: ‘Why did you do it? — How to Explain the Rationale in the Introduction of a Scientific Research Paper’
The Writing Center & Learning Support of the University Library is pleased to host a special online seminar featuring Professor Judy Tsutae Noguchi, who has extensive experience in scientific English writing and English for Specific Purposes (ESP) education and research, particularly in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), as well as medicine and pharmaceutical sciences.
In the introduction of a scientific paper, it is essential to clearly explain why your research is necessary. To do so, you must understand previous studies and identify what gaps remain unresolved. In this workshop, participants will learn how to develop and express the 'Why' of a scientific English paper through hands-on activities based on concrete examples.

Although the content is primarily designed for master’s and doctoral students in medical, pharmaceutical, science, and engineering fields, undergraduate students working on graduation research and those interested in English academic writing are also welcome.
*No registration required. Free of charge. KU ID is necessary to log in to the LMS course.
Materials (English research paper introductions) will be used during the seminar.
If you would like to get the most out of the hands-on activities, we recommend briefly reviewing the English texts in advance.
Please choose one material that interests you from the five uploaded in Sections 4–9.
During the seminar, we will practice and review the structure and key points of writing an effective introduction.
